The floodplain forest, shrub swamp, and pond communities of the LaRue Swamp host such trees as swamp oak, swamp hickory, pumpkin ash, sweet gum, bald cypress, and water tupelo. The last two especially are more commonly found in southern swamps. American lotus, swamp iris, and other aquatic plants from the burreed, bladderwort, mud plantain, and featherfoil genera also grow here. Green tree frogs, beavers, mink, muskrats, and the much rarer bobcat and freshwater otter all live within the swamp, along with the rice rat—far north of its usual range through the southeastern states.

The trees, grasses, and forbs of the barrens are normally found within dry prairie and oak savanna habitats much further north and west. The Cache River Wetlands are known for their abundant bird life, which includes great blue herons, great egrets, little blue herons, green herons, least bitterns, wood ducks, mallards, snow geese, sora rails, woodcocks, quail, mourning doves, red-headed woodpeckers, pileated woodpeckers, prothonotary warblers, black vultures, red-tailed hawks, and great horned owls.
